Discoware

Kristian Kožul’s 2005 exhibition “Discoware” at Galerie Anhava in Helsinki presented a provocative fusion of medical equipment and glamorous aesthetics. The artist transformed utilitarian objects—such as wheelchairs, bedpans, and crutches—into dazzling art pieces adorned with sequins, chrome spikes, and mirror-like surfaces. This juxtaposition of the sterile and the extravagant challenged viewers to reconsider the boundaries between functionality and ornamentation, as well as the societal perceptions of disability and care.

“Discoware” exemplified Kožul’s ongoing exploration of contrasting elements, merging the clinical with the theatrical to create objects that are both familiar and unsettling. By recontextualizing medical devices within the realm of art and glamour, Kožul invited a dialogue on the aesthetics of vulnerability and the commodification of care.
