The National Museum of Modern Art in Zagreb has acquired Mia Akrap’s work
The Column of Earthly Delights (painted ceramics, h. 189 cm, 2024) can be seen as a contemporary archaeological artifact, echoing the ways ancient funerary art revealed how past civilizations lived, believed, and celebrated. The work creates a dialogue between past, present, and future, exploring what shapes our identities today. Through the form of a painted ceramic sculpture, it reflects on the cycle of life while weaving together anthropological and personal meanings. Inspired by Bosch’s iconic Garden of Earthly Delights, the piece looks at the joys and challenges of human existence within today’s culture and society.
The work is currently on view at Oktogon, NMMU, as part of the exhibition Acquisitions/Donations 2020–2025, open until September 14.
